Painting more than splatter
Despite the name, few pictures here are random blots. Most come from Chinese ink-wash painting: a subject laid down in a handful of strokes, with the wash fading into the paper around it. The splash is the technique, not the motif. For pure drops and sprays with no subject, the Ink topic is the better hunting ground.
Keep the white space
Ink-wash pieces are built on emptiness — a crane needs the mist around it, a branch needs air above it. Give them a light background and resist filling the gaps with text. Placed on dark or busy colour, the soft grey edges vanish and the picture turns muddy.
Objects of the craft
The inkstones, ink sticks, brush and teapot show the tools rather than the result. They suit a calligraphy class, a tea shop or an article on scholar's desks, and pair naturally with one of the painted branches as a header.
Questions and answers
Are all ink splash images really transparent?
Real. We parse the PNG structure and keep only files with an alpha channel; anything with a painted-in background has been removed.
Are there large files for print?
In ink splash the sizes run from 603 to 7 000 px on the long side. Large ones are easiest to find with the “Largest” sort or the minimum-width filter.
How many files can I download?
No registration. The only limit is a few dozen files per minute per address, so the catalogue cannot be bulk-scraped.
Can I use ink splash images commercially?
Personal and educational projects — freely. For commercial use check the rights with the original source, especially for logos, characters and photos of people.
