Lettering versus its neighbours
Font is a complete typeface meant for setting text, Letter is any single character, Handwriting is everyday script, Typography is layout. Lettering is drawn by hand for one occasion: shaped words, ornate capitals, chalkboard menus, brush phrases and signs where every glyph is designed to fit the others.
The gothic L
Blackletter capitals are built from broad-nib strokes and decorative hairlines, and this one leans on that heritage with sharp spurs and a swelling curve. It works as a drop cap for a medieval-themed page, as a monogram on a wax seal design, or as the start of a tattoo-style name.
Choosing lettering files
Hand-drawn work is often scanned: check curves at full size for rough edges. Pieces with a transparent background let you place them on photos, fabric mock-ups or chalkboard textures without a white box.
