A catch-all for motion
The other categories in Light & Effects each hold one phenomenon: splash, explosion, smoke, flame, glitter. Effect gathers what doesn't fit a single name — dust clouds, whirlwinds, speed lines, bursts of colour, anything meant to make a still picture look as if something is happening.
Photo overlay or drawn effect
The powder burst is a photographic overlay: set it behind a product or a headline and it adds movement without calling attention to itself. The tornado belongs to another world, flat and outlined, and fits a game screen, a children's weather lesson or a comic panel. Mixing the two styles in one layout rarely looks right.
Soft edges
Powder, mist and smoke have no hard outline, so everything depends on the alpha channel. A weak cut-out leaves a grey fringe that shows on colour; a good one fades out completely. Try the file on black and on a saturated colour, and switch to screen or lighten blending if the edges still look heavy.
