Face, head or portrait?
In the People section, face sits between head, portrait, eye, nose and smile. It is the place for the front view, where expression is the point: a grin, a glare, a painted mask. For a full likeness with shoulders, portrait is closer; for a profile or a haircut, head and hair.
Faces that are not human
The category leans broad: cartoon animals, ghosts, masks and carved idols all count, as long as there is a readable face. That makes it a good hunting ground for mascots and avatars, where a human likeness would be too specific.
Eyes first
A face reads by its eyes. When you shrink an illustration for an avatar, check that the eyes are still two clear marks; flat styles with solid shapes, like the afro portrait, survive reduction far better than fine pen work.
