A round frame edged with bright green scallops, a rough ink ring with smoky edges and a painted fan tucked in, and a row of ripe wheat ears standing close together like a hedge.

Border versus frame, divider and corner

Frames & Backgrounds splits edge decoration four ways. Frame is closed around a picture, divider is a single line between blocks, corner fills one angle. Border runs along an edge: the strip at the top or bottom of a page, the scalloped rim of a label, a row of wheat along the foot of a harvest banner.

Seamless repeats

A border often has to stretch to any width. Before using one that way, place two copies side by side: if the join shows, the file works only at its own size. The wheat row repeats well; a hand-drawn ink ring does not, and is better used whole.

Stay inside the safe area

Printers trim a few millimetres unevenly. A border drawn right to the edge of the sheet can end up cut on one side and thick on the other. Keep decorative edges inside the safe margin, or extend them past the bleed line on purpose.
