Layers, not pictures
Light, fire, smoke, splashes, sparks, neon and glitter are grouped here because they are rarely used on their own. They go on top of something: a photo, a poster, a game scene. That is why the transparent background matters more in this section than anywhere else — a flare with a white box around it is useless.
Blending modes
Glows and rays look best set to Screen or Add in an editor: the dark parts drop out and only the light remains. Smoke and ink bursts work the other way, on Multiply over a light background. If an effect looks flat when simply pasted, switch the blend mode before hunting for another file.
