Film in the Film & TV section
Television covers the set in the living room, screen the blank display, movie the night out and popcorn the snack. film is about how pictures are made: the reel, the strip of frames, the slate that marks a take, the camera on its tripod. It is the category for production rather than for watching.
Strip, reel or slate
A strip of frames runs well as a border or a divider on a festival page. A reel or a camera stands alone as an emblem for a video studio, a film club or a course. The clapperboard says “action” — a start, a launch, a new season — and often has an empty board for writing a title.
Before you place it
Film strips are long and narrow: check the proportions against your layout before sizing, since cropping breaks the rhythm of the frames. Black film on a black page disappears; give it a grey or warm backing. Avoid cameras and reels with a maker's name visible on the body.
