A shoal of fish in a few ink strokes, a magenta brush stroke fraying at both ends, a clean rainbow arc, a papercut rooster, a scrollwork cross, a skyline fading into grey mist, a yin-yang disc filled with two landscapes and a set of flat vintage radio icons.

A category of finished pieces

In the Art section, Graphic Design stands apart from Drawing, Painting and Illustration by being made for layout. The images come ready to drop in: a brush stroke to sit behind a headline, a set of icons in one style, a rainbow cut flat at the base so it rests on a line. Painting and Drawing hold works to look at; this category holds parts to build with.

Ink, paint, flat vector

Three textures dominate. Ink strokes and blots have ragged, semi-transparent edges and work best over flat colour. Watercolour bands and stars carry soft gradients that suffer when enlarged, so start from the largest size. Flat vector pieces — the radios, the navy crab, the concentric rings — keep crisp edges and can be recoloured without trouble.

Picking a set

When several images share a page, check that they share a stroke weight and palette too. A papercut rooster and a watercolour dragonfly are both good, but side by side they look like two different designers.
