Drawing versus its neighbours

The Art section splits hand-made images finely. A sketch is loose and unfinished; line art is a clean contour of even weight; painting fills areas with colour; illustration tells a finished scene. Drawing covers the ground in between — worked-up pencil, pen or ink with visible strokes, sometimes a wash of watercolour.

East and West side by side

A noticeable share comes from Chinese brush tradition: palace architecture, fans, ink sticks, washes that bloom at the edge. The rest is closer to a Western sketchbook, with hatching and outline. The two sit uneasily on one page, so pick a tradition first.

Checking a drawing file

Everything depends on the stroke. Zoom in and make sure fine lines are continuous and free of a pale halo. Paper texture should be gone; if it remains, the drawing looks grubby on any coloured background. For print, always take the largest size, because hairlines are the first thing lost when an image is scaled up.
