Smile versus face
In the People section, smile is the narrow cousin of face. Face takes any expression — stern, masked, surprised; smile keeps the ones that cheer. When a page needs warmth in one glance, start here; for a neutral avatar or a serious portrait, face and portrait fit better.
Cartoon over photo
Nearly everything here is drawn: smileys, clowns, a sun with a hat, cartoon kids. That makes the category a store of mascots and reaction stickers rather than stock photography of people laughing. Drawn smiles also avoid the problem of a real face that someone might recognise.
Keep the mouth readable
A smile disappears first when you shrink an image. Before using a drawing as a small icon, reduce it in the editor and check that the mouth line is still there; bold shapes like the yellow smiley hold up, fine ink lines do not.
