Texture beside its neighbours

In Frames & Backgrounds, paper texture and grunge are surfaces you lay under a design, pattern background and dots repeat a motif, gradient blends colour. Texture on its own ends up holding images whose source labels mention texture for what is on the surface: the grain of carved wood, the sheen of satin, the gloss of an apple skin. Only the watercolour bands work as a background in the usual sense.

Surface as the subject

When you need a material to read clearly, these help: the throne shows carved wood and leather, the bow shows how satin catches light, the apple shows a polished rendering style. For a plain surface to put text on, the watercolour strip is the one to take, or look through paper texture and abstract background.

Tiling and scaling

A true background texture should tile without a visible seam; nothing here is built for tiling, so use them as single pieces. The watercolour bands have soft edges, which lets them fade into a page without a hard line, but they lose their grain when stretched far beyond their size.
