A red paper-cut rooster, a gilded palace lantern with long red tassels, a purple folding fan with calligraphy and a woman in a long black robe painted in ink. There are also zodiac animals in several styles: a tiger in an octagonal frame, a dog in the middle of a wheel of years, a bronze ox caught mid-charge.

A holiday with its own look

Among the Holidays categories, Chinese New Year is the only one built on a whole visual tradition rather than a single occasion. Christmas, Halloween and birthdays each have their stock props; New Year covers the January countdown with clocks and fireworks. Here the material is paper-cutting, ink painting, lanterns and the twelve animals of the lunar calendar.

Which animal, which year

The zodiac pieces are the practical core of the category. The round calendar with the dog lists the years each sign returns, so check it against the year you are designing for before using it as a backdrop. The tiger and the ox work as single emblems for a greeting card of their year; the paper-cut rooster is the traditional window decoration and reads best on plain red or cream.

Ink and ornament

The raven, the stylised pine on green hills and the yin-yang disc with a teapot and bamboo are not festive in themselves; they bring the classical Chinese painting mood to a menu, a tea shop flyer or a calligraphy workshop poster. For something unmistakably about the holiday, reach for the lantern or a zodiac animal.
