A category inside Games
The Games section also holds Board game, Card game, Puzzle, Dice and Poker. Chess is only for the game on the chequered board and its Eastern relatives — xiangqi with its round pieces, shogi — along with the pieces themselves as symbols.
Pieces as pictograms
The black king works as a favicon for a chess club, a button in a puzzle app or a marker on a tournament schedule. It is a single flat shape, so it scales to any size and can be recoloured in one click. The crown with a cross is closer to a heraldic sign; next to a board it reads as the king, on its own it reads as royalty.
Western and Chinese chess
The ink scene is xiangqi, not European chess: the pieces are discs with characters, and the board has a river across the middle. Use it for a Chinese culture event, a Lunar New Year poster or an article on the history of strategy games — not for a club that plays the Western game.
