Pattern or ornament?

In the Art section, pattern sits beside ornament, mandala, embroidery and mosaic. Ornament is a single decorative piece — a corner, a border, a flourish. Pattern should be the repeat: a motif laid out to cover a surface. Right now the category holds more single motifs than true repeats, so for tileable fills check ornament and the Frames & Backgrounds section too.

Motifs that make a repeat

Flat single-colour shapes — the crab, the crown, the heron — are the easiest to turn into a pattern: set one in a grid, offset every second row, and the result looks deliberate. Photographic items such as the jewellery or the diamonds do not tile well and are better used alone.

Checking seams

If a file is sold as seamless, put two copies side by side and look for the join. A real repeat continues across the edge without a line or a jump in colour.
