Compass beside maps and flags
In Flags & Countries, map, globe and world Map show the ground itself, and travel covers the journey. Compass is the instrument that points the way: pocket and marine compasses, wind roses drawn on old charts, weathervanes and the small north arrow that sits in the corner of a plan.
Object or symbol
A photographed brass compass carries a sense of age and craft; it suits an antiques listing, an explorer themed header or a book cover. A wind rose or a weathervane in flat colour works more like a sign: it marks orientation on a map, a hiking trail board or a travel agency logo.
What to check
The rose has to stay legible: scale the file down to the size you need and see whether the cardinal letters still read. Make sure north actually points up, since mirrored copies circulate, and that the glass reflection hasn't been cut away together with the background.
