Folders as a metaphor
On screens a directory is drawn as a paper folder with a tab, even though nobody files paper anymore. The outlined versions here read clearly at small sizes and suit file managers, storage pages and help articles; the stuffed blue folder works better as a larger illustration.
Open or closed
A closed folder usually means a collection, an open one means you are inside it or browsing its contents. Use the pair consistently in one interface so the state is obvious without a label.
Search companions
The binoculars glyph and the neutral round button pair naturally with folder icons in a navigation bar: one for browsing, one for searching, one for a generic action.
Questions and answers
Are all directory images really transparent?
All 6 images carry a real alpha channel. On the image page you can switch the backdrop to white or dark to see the edges.
What sizes are available?
Originals range from 600 to 2 400 pixels. On download you can shrink to 64–1024 px; enlarging beyond the original is not offered.
How many files can I download?
Downloads are free and open. With very frequent requests the site asks to confirm you are not a robot — a normal visitor never sees it.
What is the licence?
Personal and educational projects — freely. For commercial use check the rights with the original source, especially for logos, characters and photos of people.
