On screen and on paper
Most of these signs end up in interfaces and documents rather than on walls: an error banner, a confirmation dialog before deleting, a warning box in a manual. A plain exclamation in a triangle is understood everywhere and needs no caption.
Picking the weight
Outline triangles are quiet and match line-icon sets. Solid black or yellow ones are loud and suit messages that must not be missed. A glossy orb or a bomb adds personality, which fits games and casual apps but feels out of place in serious safety documents.
When to be specific
A generic exclamation says "be careful". A pictogram such as a saw blade or a snowflake names the actual danger, and that is what belongs next to a machine or a freezer door.
