Where the tail points
The little tail is what turns a shape into speech: it tells the reader who is talking. Place the bubble so the tail aims at the speaker’s mouth, and flip the image horizontally if it points the wrong way.
Speaking, thinking, shouting
Comic conventions give each outline a job. A smooth oval is ordinary speech, a cloud with bumps is a thought, a spiky edge is a shout or an alarm. Mixing them on one page lets a short strip carry tone without extra words.
In the language classroom
Balloons are a natural frame for dialogue exercises: fill-in-the-gap conversations, role-play prompts, vocabulary cards. The pronoun card shows the format — characters on one side, a sentence with a blank on the other.
Questions and answers
Is the transparency real or a painted checkerboard?
Yes. Every file is checked for an alpha channel rather than a white or chequered backdrop. Images without real transparency do not enter the catalogue.
Are there large files for print?
Originals range from 714 to 1 280 pixels. On download you can shrink to 64–1024 px; enlarging beyond the original is not offered.
Do I need to register to download?
Downloads are free and open. With very frequent requests the site asks to confirm you are not a robot — a normal visitor never sees it.
Can I use speech images commercially?
Personal and educational projects — freely. For commercial use check the rights with the original source, especially for logos, characters and photos of people.
