What a gene actually makes

You will not find the familiar double helix here. These are the folded chains a gene encodes, which is what changes when a mutation strikes. That makes them a better fit than DNA art for writing about inherited disease, drug targets or why a single altered letter in the code matters.

Receptors and signalling

Several of the models are receptors that cross the cell membrane seven times. They suit articles on hormones, smell and vision, or on how many medicines work, since a large share of drugs act on exactly this receptor family.

Practical notes

One receptor sits on a light grey backdrop; the rest are on transparency. When the colour runs from blue to red it traces the chain from start to finish, so keep the full gradient visible instead of cropping one end away.

Questions and answers

Is the transparency real or a painted checkerboard?

Real. We parse the PNG structure and keep only files with an alpha channel; anything with a painted-in background has been removed.

What sizes are available?

In gene the sizes run from 600 to 1 200 px on the long side. Large ones are easiest to find with the “Largest” sort or the minimum-width filter.

Do I need to register to download?

No sign-up needed. The file is served after a short wait on the download page.

What is the licence?

Personal and educational projects — freely. For commercial use check the rights with the original source, especially for logos, characters and photos of people.
