How it differs from Fire and Steam
In the Effects section, fire brings the flame and bubbles bring the fizz; smoke is what hangs in the air afterwards. Dark plumes belong to fire-safety pages and disaster renders, soft white wisps to incense, candles and moody product shots. Steam over a coffee cup sits closer to food imagery.
What makes a usable file
The whole value of smoke is in its transparency. Place it over a dark and a light background before you commit: good smoke fades into both, bad smoke shows a square halo or a hard cut where the original photo ended. Columns that rise straight are easier to position than drifting clouds that spread sideways.
